Think About How Much Has Changed

For most of human history, our environment followed relatively predictable rhythms.

The sun came up. We moved throughout the day. Darkness arrived. We rested.

Today, we can wake up to an alarm on our phone, spend the day under artificial lighting and in front of computers, come home to televisions and tablets, and finish the night scrolling through a screen inches from our face.

Add Wi-Fi, Bluetooth devices, wireless earbuds, smart watches, cell towers, and the growing number of connected devices around us, and our technological environment looks nothing like it did even a generation ago.

That doesn't mean technology is inherently bad.

It means our environment changed—and our biology still matters.

EMFs Are Only Part of the Technology Conversation

Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, have become a popular—and sometimes controversial—health topic.

We are exposed to both natural and human-made electromagnetic fields. Modern wireless technologies have dramatically increased the number of sources surrounding us, which has led researchers to continue studying their potential biological effects.

But focusing exclusively on EMFs can cause us to miss a much bigger and more immediate issue.

Technology has changed our behavior, too.

-We sit more.

-We spend less time outside.

-Artificial light extends our days.

-Screens follow us into our bedrooms.

-Notifications keep our brains engaged.

-And many people rarely experience a period when they aren't connected to something.

Those changes can influence systems we already know are important to health—especially sleep, circadian rhythms, movement, stress, and recovery.

Your body has an internal clock. Light entering your eyes helps tell your brain whether it should be preparing for activity or preparing for sleep. Morning daylight provides one set of signals. Darkness provides another. But modern technology can blur those boundaries. Bright indoor lighting and screens allow us to create an artificial daytime long after the sun goes down. Why does that matter? Because sleep isn't simply the time when you're unconscious. Sleep is an important period of recovery. Your brain, immune system, hormones, metabolism, and cellular repair processes all follow daily rhythms. When those rhythms are repeatedly disrupted, the effects can reach far beyond feeling tired the next morning.

Start Connecting the Dots
